2. Amhara Region REDD+ Coordination Office TRANING REPORT November 5-10/2016, Bahir Dar

Introduction

To reduce the impact of climate change and to lead its economic development in a sustainable
way, Ethiopia launched CRGE(Climate Resilience Green Economy) strategy in 2010. As part of
the strategy, the government has selected four initiatives for fast-track implementation. One
among the four initiatives is Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
(REDD). To this end; the government of Ethiopia has been implementing various programmes
and projects targeting climate change. One among these projects is REDD+(Reducing emission
from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation of forest carbon stock, sustainable
management of forest and enhancement of forest carbon stock). REDD+ project is organized at
both federal and regional levels. The project officially launched at national level in 2013 and the
Amhara REDD+ coordination office established last year. The project follow a phased approach
and it has three phases. Now, the project is at its initial phase, that is, readiness phase.
Institutional strengthening and capacity building of stakeholders are among the activities to be
implemented at this phase.
The project has a number of stakeholders whose active participation and involvement in the
project is critical for the success of the project. To ensure full participation and involvement of
stakeholders, awareness creation and capacity building activities of stakeholders are
indispensible. To this end; Amhara REDD+ coordination office organized a training to pertinent
project stakeholders at Enjibara town from November 5-10/2016 in order to create awareness
about REDD+ project and to train about basic forestry techniques.
The trainees were experts in either forestry and/or natural resource management disciplines
working from regional up to district level. Thus; the training was believed to improve the
institutional implementation capacity of the respective institutions of the trainees and the
awareness of trainees on REDD+ project objectives.
Therefore; this training report is prepared to create common understanding among project
partners on the progress of Amhara REDD+ coordination office in capacitating stakeholders
and to share lessons learned from this training.

Objectives

  • To create common understanding among stakeholders about REDD+ project and to
discuss on areas of collaboration between the project and the stakeholders.
  • To upgrade the technical capacity of experts working at different levels thereby
contributing to sustainable management of forests in Amhara region.

3. Amhara Consultation Workshop with stakeholders on identification and coordination of relevant ongoing initiatives

Introduction

REDD+ as part of the national Climate Resilient Green Economy strategy (CRGE) aims at developing an environmentally sustainable and climate resilient economy, which brings the country at middle-income status with net zero emission by 2030. Ethiopia considers REDD+ as an opportunity and viable source of sustainable finance for investment in forest management, forest conservation and forest restoration to enhance multiple benefits of forests, including (but not limited to) biodiversity conservation, watershed management, increased resilience to climate change, improved livelihoods and reduced poverty.

The REDD+ readiness has been in operation since 2013 in Ethiopia aiming to make the country ready for implementation and performance based reward for the emission reductions achieved.

In this respect, the Amhara REDD+ Project coordination Office has been keen to hold  Regional level consultation workshop to discuss about similar on-going activities for better coordination and synergy.

Objective

The objective of this consultation workshop was to discuss about relevant on-going activities for better coordination and synergy. The consultation workshop used as an experience sharing forum during which the stakeholders were expected to share their experiences. The participants of this consultation workshop was also expected to develop a workable coordination scheme as input for program design.  In addition, the consultation was aiming at informing the status of Ethiopia’s REDD+ readiness.
