The REDD+ Ethiopia R-Package has been formally endorsed by the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility Participants Committee on the 26th of September 2017 at Luang Parabang in Laos PDR, with great recognition of the efforts made on Readiness implementation.

Ethiopia’s R-package has gone through a rigorous independent review by an international Technical Appraisal Panel (TAP). Meanwhile, the World Bank witnessed the achievements of readiness demonstrated by Ethiopia at the meeting.

The Ethiopian delegation was led by His Excellency Ato Kebede Yimam, Forest State Minister of Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, where he presented Ethiopia’s commitment on climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts, and acknowledged the contribution of our development partners such as the World Bank, Norway and many others.

His Excellency added that Ethiopia considers REDD+ as an opportunity and transformational tool for climate change mitigation through emission reduction and climate change adaptation.

He has also acknowledged that Ethiopia has benefited from the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) and BioCF grants for Readiness Preparation within the global REDD+ mechanism.

His Excellency eventually confirmed that Ethiopia has effectively used the fund, which has been granted by donors in the course of Readiness phase.

The National REDD+ Secretariat Coordinator Dr. Yitebitu Moges on his part presented the R-Package detailing what REDD+ Ethiopia has accomplished so far in the Readiness program. The FCPF Participants Committee reviewed and raised questions and concerns, which were adequately defended by the Ethiopian delegation.

R-package endorsement is a big milestone in Ethiopia’s REDD+ program, and will enable the country to request the international community for financial and technical support for REDD+ strategy implementation.

The State Minister has served the FCPF Participants Committee and Assembly as a panelist on Ethiopia’s experience on land tenure, especially focusing on women’s constitutional rights on land use and other properties. Best practices on land tenure has been elaborated and shared to the international community.
